Greens Score Big in Key German State

It is being hailed as the start of a new political era in Germany. The Green Party looks set to appoint its first state governor after Sunday's election in the state of Baden-Württemberg. The result is a huge setback for Chancellor Angela Merkel.

The Fukushima disaster has had, and will have, many consequences around the world. One of the more unlikely, however, appears to be the results of Sunday's election in the southwestern German state of Baden-Württemberg, where skepticism about nuclear power helped propel the Green Party to a historic victory over Angela Merkel's conservative Christian Democratic Union (CDU).

The Greens doubled their share of the vote to 24.2 percent, according to preliminary results released by the state electoral commission. They are now likely to govern the state in a coalition with the center-left Social Democratic Party (SPD), which secured 23.1 percent of the vote, down 2 percent from the last election in 2006. In what would be a first for Germany, the Greens, as the senior partner in the coalition, will likely appoint the state governor.

Radioactivity in Food, Water Sparks Fears of Widespread Contamination in Japan

Japan is facing growing fears as radiation leaking from the badly-damaged Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power station has contaminated food and water supplies. Bottled water was in short supply across Tokyo after Japanese authorities warned that tap water is too dangerous for consumption by infants. Thousands of people remain without potable water in areas of northern Japan ravaged by the earthquake and tsunami. We speak with Aileen Mioko Smith of Kyoto-based Green Action, one of Japan’s leading voices challenging the production, commerce and transport of nuclear material, and calling for sustainable energy policies.

The Egyptian now has a voice

By : Nesma Diaa

First i would like to extend my thanks and respect to the January revolution and young people who have sacrificed everything they have for an Idea ... It Is the Idea of Justice and Freedom
In previous eras and to be more specific in thirty years we did not bother to head towards the election committees to present our opinion that was because it was portrayed as if there is someone else who knows what is good for the country better than we do and they will present their opinion on behalf of us as well.

The Egyptian has a voice now in what happens and the affairs of his country (With Emphasis on the word “HIS”)
Now, Egypt is breathing Freedom and Democracy.
Now, we Know the culture of freedom of thought and expression
I felt really proud of being Egyptian and Has “YES” or “NO” expressing my voice as it is going to be respected as well and taken into consideration.

I lived more than a great scene …where the row is filled with Egyptian Voters old or young / male or female.
Everyone lined up to express their opinion, and no matter what will happen they will not neglect any opinion but it will take both opinions into consideration with the same weight and finally what the majority decides will be applied , The opposite of what we have used to that “You Have No Right To Express because We Know better than you”

Really, Thank you as “January revolution”, Which allowed me to have a voice as an EGYPTIAN

The common humanity....The reforming world

By the end of 2010 and the beginning of 2011 we witnessed a new paradigm in the world, successive and fast political, economical, social and natural major events are taking place especially in Africa and Asia.

Tunisia, Egypt then Libya and Japan and in every event we were moved by our very basic motive the common humanity we share we all feel a kind of support with different  levels offcourse but our desire to support the Tunisians and the Egyptians in asking for freedom and democracy and shifting political paradigms and methodologies in the middle east plus our desire to save the Libyan people from massacres and all kind of inhuman tyranny then our desire to support and help to relief the Japanese people against the major natural disaster of the century may be.

That was not only mere feelings but rather effective movements from politicians, diplomats, NGOs, human rights initiatives….etc.

All this assures that the world is reforming to a more sophisticated united paradigm based on synergy, maybe it is just an indication for a first step towards the 1000 miles road and we have also to mention that this rings a bell towards a peaceful world free from nuclear based industries whether peaceful or military.

Was Hillary Clinton welcomed in Tahrir square ??

How lucky you would be if you visited Tahrir square now as you will be breathing freedom, the essence of the power of the human spirit and desire for human rights and democracy.
Such as Hillary Clinton did today with all this warm welcoming from the Egyptians -who now act as an idol for peaceful revolution- trying to shake hands with her and welcoming her just as they do with anyone who wanted to get a portion of such spirit.
The question is: was Hillary Clinton really welcomed in Tahrir square and is she welcomed in Egypt???
The answer lies in the extraordinary potential of the Egyptian people right now of building bridges with the whole world towards different paradigms, and even there was some voices saying that US position towards the revolution was unclear and that they have always been friends to the previous regime plus the unlimited will and desire of the Egyptians for (Letting the Egyptians decide by themselves what they want, how their country should be and what laws should govern them) , without any interference .
But the stunning flexibility and desire to cooperate peacefully and productively with anybody is a basic feature in the Egyptian characteristics especially in the current generation and it reflects that Hillary Clinton was most welcomed in Tahrir Square just as anybody else.

Feeling Entrepreneurial?

By : Inji Amr
In my humble opinion, it is a time for entrepreneurship, starting SMEs, creating jobs and output.

For example, we could decide to volunteer to clean the streets and paint the walls (a scenario where we don’t go to work and nobody makes money). Or we could decide to start a small company that does that, go to our own jobs, make money, hire previously unemployed young men and women, pay them salaries to do the work. In both cases the streets get cleaned, yet in the second scenario, their wages now create a purchasing power, consumption, spending, their spending becomes income to other people and the cycle continues.

Accordingly, I’m tossing together some suggested business ideas for those of you with time, energy or liquidity:
  • Home-based mini-agri-businesses. I realise that home economics is not the first thing that comes to mind when searching for a start-up idea. Yet the current situation is the follows: Egypt’s soil produces some of the best fruits and vegetables. Given recent political changes annual exports of agricultural produce took a dive due to obstacles in distribution and logistics. These volumes of produce are now in the market risking perish as many of the larger hypermarkets have been vandalised and hence are not procuring new merchandise; and the average Egyptian consumer has reduced his spending in anticipation of the future and due to challenges to liquidity.
  • The suggestion is for housewives, those still looking for jobs or even students to start small home based manufacturing facilities. Purchase the fresh fruits and vegetables from the market (start by buying from the little guy, his cash flow cycle is a lot more unforgiving) at ridiculously cheap prices these days. Then start making gourmet jams, preserves, pickles, juices, frozen cut and cleaned vegetables or  pre-washed pre-cut salads. This way the produce lasts longer in its refrigerated processed state. These items can be branded and sold through a facebook group to end-users or to retailers.
  • Go into the security business. Citizens these days have a heightened sense of their need for security. Utilise the network of dependable unemployed young men you met during “elligan elsha3beya” to start a security men provision service. Or even better, provide a more capital-intensive solution, hire individuals to build security systems and market them. These would be partially software code and partially metal grills/cages/bars that can be used to lock down stores in the case the glass is broken to hold the merchandise and the robbers in while the cops are alerted to the emergency.
  • Clean. As outlined in the example I started the blogpost with, contemplate starting a cleaning service, this does not have to be exclusive to the streets and can extend to providing painting and reconstruction services to those who have suffered damages during the events of the past 10 days.
  • Manufacture and sell revolution memorabilia. We are all feeling very patriotic these days, someone should capitalise on that. There is a great opportunity for flag and Egyptian themed items, this includes but is not limited to clothing, car accessories, flags, key-chains and other trinkets, prints of photos from Tahrir. Most importantly, don’t design the product and have some factory in China manufacture it for you, manufacture here, hire Egyptian workers, use Egyptian factories and Egyptian raw materials.
  • Venture capital. For the slightly larger players amongst you, this is as good a time as ever, start a private equity / venture capital firm and offer funding to start-ups and SMEs with business ideas that have great potential but whom are lacking guidance and funding.
I realise that the post to some of you is redundant and to others the ideas would seem unusual. Yet kindly remember that these are merely suggestions, inspired by what is happening and which aim to serve the target of creating business and generating growth and employment in the Egyptian economy.
Good luck to you all and God bless.

Louder than words

Egyptian messages during 25th of January revolution:
We should not be defined by our differences….we should be defined by the common humanity that we share.
And photos speak louder than words :

It is time for Africa

Egypt has always been in the position of a regional major player, what is going on its land usually finds it`s echoes and effects regionally and in a lot of cases internationally,

Whether Egyptians like it or not but this is the case, a big deal of cleverness and experience should be there when trying to balance between all of the ideologies and views.

Between its role in Africa, Arab world, Islamic world and its commitment to hot spots as the Palestinian-Israeli case. More or less this is pretty well known and a matter of common sense. But the doubts now are whether the Egyptian youth after the revolution of 25th of January have what it takes to be able to effectively and productively achieve this balance.

We strongly believe that the Egyptian youth have all what it takes and even more, they can take it to another unexpected level as they already did in their revolution.

Surprisingly now we also believe and recommend that this time the Egyptian people should start with Africa. As Egypt around more than 30 years ago was building very good relations with its fellow Africans they have always been friends and colleagues in a lot of common dreams and projects. But unfortunately the previous regime resulted in a major crack in these historical relations also resulting in Egypt losing a lot of credit concerning its African colleagues which certainly was the result of the decisions of few personnel and has never been the desire of the Egyptian people.

Now it’s the role of the Egyptian youth to prove to the world and especially Africa how they are capable of rebuilding peaceful and productive bridges achieving their positive role and duty.
